Aggie Cookies

I made these Aggie cookies for the church's silent and live auctions yesterday. They would be great for tailgating parties, secret pals, care packages to students at A&M, Ring Day, and graduation parties. To see more cookie and cake pictures, go to Sweet Station on Facebook.

Brainwashed!

Lately we've been listening to a lot of CDs in the van because the DVD player isn't working. That's fine with me until we have to take a long trip. Anyway, I have tons of childrens' CDs that the kids have grown to love and as a teacher, I appreciate their value to the kids' education.

Sunday night we were on our way to grab a quick bite and one of the kids asked to listen to the Aggie War Hymn. Made this momma so proud. We were on 2818, getting ready to turn onto Wellborn Road and had full view of A&M's Kyle Field just about 2 miles up the road.

The song began with the deep boom of, "Recall! Step Off! On! Hullabaloo!"
Lauren asked, "Mommy, who is that?" I told her the Aggies. She asked where they were and I told her to look out the window. I said that's where the Aggies play football and that's where the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band plays that wonderful song. Her reply was, "Wow, they sure are loud cuz I can hear them all the way in the van!"

I am not sure why but lately Caleb randomly bursts out with, "Some may boast...of prowess bold." Then he stops and says, "Now you!"

That is one song I won't get tired of singing to the kids over and over.

Who are the people in your neighborhood?

We live in a hidden neighborhood. I mean it is right off of the access road but there are people who were born and raised in this town and they have no idea our little neighborhood exists. There are only 2 streets with I don't know, maybe 30 houses on each street? Somehow, even our neighborhood is not immune from renting to students and I have to say most of the college students here are law-abiding citizens. Except for the house across the street! Keep in mind that their back yard butts up to an office building parking lot.

So as I was driving home for lunch yesterday, I noticed about 3 police cars parked in the parking lot where their house is. Then I saw the police officers sitting on top of their fence. All I could think of was, "Great! What now?"
Several years ago we came home to see the Brazos Valley Task Force conducting a drug raid at that house. We do not live in the ghetto!

These tennants have been there since August and they seem like nice people. So I drove down our street and noticed the animal control truck in front of their house. I remembered how our dog was barking at something under our deck the other night so I sent Stephen over to see if maybe this critter was in their back yard. The animal control officer (who was sitting in her truck) just told Stephen they were waiting for the tennants to come home. Okay....what on earth could be going on? Some more police arrived and one of the tennants arrived and walked them into the back yard. Stephen decided to go check the mail, which is up the street and around on the next street. When he got home the phone rang. It was another neighbor who told Stephen she saw him walking and he needed to close the garage and stay inside because some pit bulls were loose, one had already bitten a neighbor and a police officer had to shoot one that was coming at him aggressively. It's a good thing we hadn't been playing outside when the dogs got loose, I can't imagine.

It has been confirmed on the news that the dogs were over on the street behind ours and they were not allowing people to get to their cars. I found out today that one of the people who was chased back into her house is the sweet older woman who lives 2 doors down from the dog owner. Animal control could not get close enough to catch the dogs because they were so aggressive so they called the police. I absolutely love dogs, I have had dogs my whole life. I believe the police officer had every right to shoot that dog. I don't think pit bulls are dogs, they are beasts. I have seen many shows on them and it is just their nature, no matter how they are raised, to have killer instinct. They have the most powerful jaws that can snap just about anything. I don't want to start a controversy here but too many innocent people, often children, are mawled by these beasts and I see no sense in having them around. Stephen works at the local TV station and whenever email is sent to the station, it is sent to all the employees. The dog owner wrote in to say how dare that police officer shoot the dog? How could he leave him to die? He was outraged at how this was handled and about the fact that he is being fined. He said everyone knows that his dog is sweet and now his dog will never be the same. Can you believe that? Hey dude, how about all the neighbors who were terrorized? What if the smaller kids were outside playing as they sometimes are? All of this in our nice, quiet neighborhood.

I need your ideas

Our postal service is the worst. Let me tell you all that has happened to us in the 4 years we've been here. In November '03 I mailed out rehearsal dinner invitations in BRIGHT green envelopes. All my friends in the DFW area received theirs but one of my bridesmaids who lives in CS 2 miles away never got hers. Well, I shouldn't say never. Months later she got it and she said it was all crumpled up. How does a bright green envelope get lost in the mail? Then, when we went to visit my parents in Nov. 04, after Lauren was born, I left the plug for my breast pump in Bedford. You can't just run to Wal-Mart and buy a replacement you know. My parents mailed it and it took almost a month for me to get it. I was running the pump off batteries and they just don't work the same. When I called the post office to complain, they said maybe the ink ran and the address wasn't legible. WHAT? First of all, the return address label is a label. Second of all, have you seen my mom's handwriting? It is like a rubber stamp. When I was in school my friends all told me I'd never be able to forge that handwriting. Seriously, there is no way the label was illegible.

For Easter this year my mom sent a card to each of the kids and a card to Stephen and me. She sent them altogether but Lauren NEVER got her card. My Mother-in-law sent me a Mother's Day card this year, I have never received it. The latest mystery is my mom mailed Halloween cards from Bedford 2 Saturdays ago, October 6. We still have yet to see them. I know that about a year ago one of the news stations did a story on this but it doesn't seem like it has gotten any better. I didn't even mention the sales ads that say please deliver between and we get them the last day of the sale.

So.....any other Aggieland readers having this problem?
Anyone else out there have some legal suggestions?

BTHO Texas Tech

I'm sure I may have mentioned in previous blogs that the Aggies are #1 in the Big 12 South Division but it deserves being mentioned again. Tomorrow we take on Texas Tech in Lubbock and let me say they deserve a butt whoopin'. Have you seen the t-shirts one of the Tech frats designed? It is too graphic to display on my blog but let me post how it was described in the Tech school paper- "If you haven't seen the story (Was your head buried in the sand?), the front of the shirt - which was sold by the Theta Chi fraternity without authorization from the Tech administration - says "Vick 'Em." The back of the shirt has a silhouette of Atlanta Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick holding A&M mascot Reveille hanging by her neck in a noose." So I'll be watching tomorrow and I hope to see the best performance of the season by the Fightin' Texas Aggie Football Team.

On our way up to The Zone we visited with a very nice lady who turned out to be #37 Misi Tupe's mom.

Hump It Lauren!

Then we did some yells and I am so proud of my girl y'all, she knew what to do. She even spelled A-G-G-I-E-S before the crowd. A group in front of us thought she was the cutest thing, they couldn't believe she just turned 3. She kept saying, "I'm so excited" and that she was having a good time, poor thing is confused about what really goes on at an Aggie game when the stands are a swayin' and the team is on the field. She thinks the birds play in the sprinklers on the field. One day baby....Mommy's going to take you to a real game.

Aggie Day!

I have to thank my dear friend Heather for asking me (and Stephen for saying that I could go) to the Aggie game Saturday. If you didn't see it, it was a true nail biter. Who would have thought that after a 19-0 lead at halftime that we'd go into triple overtime? But we won 47-45 and a win is all I wanted. After the game we had to wait out the rain before we could walk back to the car. Did you know it was raining? It didn't rain a drop at our house but we had quite a downpour at Kyle Field. Heather and I decided to head to the MSC where we watched the TCU-t.u. game for awhile. The rain stopped so we headed North. Would you believe that as soon as we were out in the open, just passed Albritton Tower, the sky opened once again. We were just about drenched when we made it to the car. Thanks Heather for the awesome memories!
